Hoop Picks 2011

The USA Today always does a good job with their March Madness coverage and this year is no different with their team by team capsules for the East RegionSouthwestSouthEast , West .

The scoresreport site picks Ohio State to win it all, and makes use of statistical analysis for picking the winners with  :

For example, take this match up where he selects George Mason overVillanova based on Sagarin predictor (Pomeroy calculation) numbers:

George Mason 26-6, 17-3. Bid: Colonial at-large 84.60 (.5102) /  Villanova 21-11, 9-9. Bid: Big East at-large 85.72 (.4873)

Nate Silver of the New York Times picks Ohio State in his bracket, and  tells us his prediction methodology:

Sagarin’s ratings for USA Today. We use the “predictor” version of Sagarin’s ratings that accounts for margin of victory in past games. Although Sagarin has never fully disclosed his methodology — it is most likely based on an iterative process — these are among the oldest power ratings and have a long track record of success.

– Ken Pomeroy’s ratings. Unlike Sagarin’s ratings, Pomeroy’s account separately for offense and defense. They probably have the soundesttheoretical basis of any of the systems, and have performed well.

– Third are the LRMC ratings — LRMC is an acronym for “logistic regression, Markov Chain” — designed by Joel Sokol of Georgia Tech. LRMC is a relatively new approach, but it has performed well in recent years. (Sokol also provided me with retroactive versions of his ratings going back to 2003). It is probably the most emperically-driven of the four systems, using the results of home-and-home series during the regular season.

– And finally, the Sonny Moore power ratings, which have been published since 1974. Although Moore’s ratings are superficially similar to Sagarin’s, they have some novel features, such as more heavily weighting the results of recent games.

The games tip off today and here is the schedule:

You don’t have to reach far these days to find examples of how the St. Petersburg Times doesn’t make use of the best objectivity when covering the home town Rays. In the most recent episode of the series, Gary Shelton has told the fellow fans of the Tampa Bay Rays to accept mediocrity. We the fans of the Tampa Bay baseball club should just accept a nice ride, and not have championship level aspirations.  This theme is an insult for every die hard fan that hopes his team does everything they can to give his/her team a chance to win a championship.

As a fan of any sport, everyone knows that winning a championship takes talent, dedication, and a little luck.  However, the message here is the fans should just throw in the towel and enjoy the ride.  We shouldn’t want to be like the die hard fans of let say the Yankees where the goal is a championship. For every Rays fan  that is still on board after suffering through the first decade of this franchise,  this message here is that we should go back and be a part of that thinking of being unsuccessful.  We should go back in time like the days of Vince Naimoli, and rather than wanting to win, we should focus on how much the owners profited rather than putting a winner on the field.

I personally don’t want this franchise to be remembered as the team that serves as a farm team for the rest of MLB, like the Pirates of the recent decade. Instead, I hope that the franchise is remembered by the championships they won. For a long while this franchise had nothing and sure now at least we have 2008. But, I want more than that. The players want more than that. You should want more than that for this franchise.   Don’t settle.

Selection Sunday

We interrupt this baseball post, for another brief college basketball moment.

The Georgia Bulldogs pulled of an upset of major proportions in the SEC tourney. They won the SEC Crown in Atlanta (which had a tornado that interrupted and postponed play Friday night), which made up for their one sided SEC losing season and secured a spot in the Big Dance. The Gators making an early exit this weekend, just have to go home and wait until next year while appreciating what took place in 2006 and 2007. www.facebook.com/bracket introduces bracketology to the facebook crowd.

The team I feel bad for is Seth Greenberg’s Virginia Tech Hokies. The Bulldogs most likely took their spot.

We interrupt this baseball post, for a brief college basketball moment.

I just read about a web 2.0 mashup involving facebook and cbs sports. This situational application at www.facebook.com/bracket introduces bracketology to the facebook crowd. Talk about social networking and sports meeting at the hip.

Speaking of social networks, MetsNet has a social network , and so do Lenny and Paul.

There is no word from 38pitches.com about the season ending shoulder injury that Schilling is rumored to have. May bee Phil Hughes will let the cat out of the bag, as the story has been the buzz of the blogosphere this evening. Curt has never been one to shy away from the open platform, so I do expect a posting sometime soon about the issue .

Speaking of the heated rivalry between the Yankees and Red Sox, Theo Epstein and Brian Cashman exchanged ideas in an open forum about a week ago. Who knew Hatfield and the McCoys could share the same stage.

What about the baseball players who join in the fun about what is being written about them. In an entry by user U Know Who on the Atlanta Constitution blog by David O’Brien (DOB), it certainly sounds like Braves 3B Chipper Jones:

I read the blogs pretty often. I like to know what is being said. Not so much during the the season because I don’t have that much time, but in the offseason, I read quite a bit especially when we make moves just to see how jacked up u guys get.

Its that time of the year that Rotisserie Baseball leagues are being put together, and for anyone who has ever played the game knows, the toughest decision an owner has to make is choosing the name to call your team. The site Brock for Broglio has some ideas with the 101 best team names.

Its Sunday and the Superbowl is a few hours away. Everyone is getting their Superbowl munchies togther getting a good seat on the coach expecting to see the Tom Brady to Randy Moss Show. The record setting hookup combo have the Patriots in position to achieve to one of the most impressive feats in sports history. The Tom Brady to Moss tandem reminds us of another sports dynasty in the 49ers Hall of Fame combo of Montana to Rice.

While it is impressive that Giants have gotten to where they are today, it will be hard to match the Patriots offensive firepower. The Giants defense is what keeps them in the game. If the secondary of Giants have any holes, Brady will eventually expose them.  The thing about the Patriots is they are battle tested despite the high level they have been playing at all season. They have been tested and have answered the call each time out. I just don’t see it that close. If the game is not over by halftime, I’ll be surprised.

Onto the Links…

Baseball prospects have been in the new this week,  with Baseball Prospectus and ESPN releasing the top 100 lists.
